Alice Reid
FOUNDING WRITER
Alice Reid is a second generation Scottish-Canadian artist turned academic turned political educator and activist from Southern California. Her journey of radical awakening began while attending graduate school at the University of Memphis, Tennessee.
The conditions in the heart of Memphis during 2016-2018 were those of systemic constitutional violations including intensifying, unlawful police surveillance against Black activists and communities. In this city where Martin Luther King was assassinated, Alice committed herself to social justice work.
She took her research and study and applied it in various ways to the movements that were happening across the city, like #TakeEmDown901, #MLK50, and The Movement for Black Lives.
Her teachers and comrades were descendants of enslaved peoples. Their trust and acceptance of a young, white woman from a middle-class background embodied the Black Panthers’ rainbow coalition, an influence she carries with her today.
Her guiding belief is:
Internationalist solidarity for global liberation from capitalist-imperialism.
Currently, she teaches at public colleges and universities across Southern California, using story-telling to connect global issues to local experiences in the classroom. She believes in radical pedagogy, re-humanizing education, and teaching students how to think not what to think.
In early 2026, she became a Green Party county council member, party delegate at both local and state levels, and press secretary for an assembly member campaign. She is now an editorial staff member and writer at The Left Current, endeavoring to combine theory and praxis to build power together for our collective liberation.
