Khushali is a second generation, Indian-American woman born and raised in Southern California. Growing up around extended family, she experienced what it means to be raised by a village and with matriarchal and collectivist values.
She holds a bachelors degree in Economics and Public Health Policy from the University of California, Irvine. Khushali is curious at heart and a lifelong learner - her current topics of interest include the art of textiles, yoga, decolonized history, and interior design. Her writing styles are at seemingly opposing ends of the spectrum - from analytical and educational to poetic. Her love of writing comes from her maternal grandmother, a smart, tenacious woman and a poetic writer who didn’t have the opportunity to pursue her passion in her lifetime, so Khushali carries this torch for them both. During these times of chaos and destabilization, nature, art, and animals are her biggest sources for grounding.
With grandparents who grew up under British colonial rule and a great-grandfather who was a Freedom Fighter imprisoned for participating in the Dandi (Salt) March, Khushali’s drive for justice against oppressive structures is rooted in her ancestral lineage. She honors the legacy of all those who came before by taking action locally.
In the last few years, Khushali has been involved in movement spaces to create new ways of being, doing, and think outside our existing systems. Her north star is “liberation for all” and she she writes to contribute to this in her small way. She deeply believes writing puts us in an imaginative place — one where we can bring to life the world we want to see.
