Sunghi is a Gen X Korean American, born in Los Angeles to parents who immigrated from South Korea. Primarily raised by her grandmother, who lived through the Japanese occupation of Korea, she grew up with an awareness of generational trauma and the lasting effects of structural injustice. Those early influences shaped a lifelong curiosity about resilience, identity, and the complexities of the human experience.
An artist by nature, Sunghi is drawn to storytelling in all its forms. Whether through filmmaking, costume design, writing, painting, she seeks to explore what connects people at their most fundamental level. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of California, Irvine, and an A.A. from Parsons School of Design in New York—an educational path that reflects her wide-ranging creative interests rather than a single discipline. She has immersed herself in memoir writing, improvisational theater, stand-up comedy, film production, environmental stewardship in film production, and dog rescue, continually embracing new experiences as opportunities to learn, grow, and better understand others.
At her core, Sunghi is a relentless truth seeker. She possesses a strong moral compass and an unwavering, if sometime, unhealthy belief that justice should prevail. While she occasionally jokes that her sense of justice leans toward revenge, she is quick to add the important qualifier: always within the bounds of the law.
